I feel the need to write out this letter to all my customers, fellow breeders and friends. 04/22/05, I went through an ordeal that I would rather be frank and open about, in case any one may have heard rumors or are wondering about breeders rights and what this means. Becoming a breeder is a choice that I have made, not because of money, but because of my love for the dogs that I work with. Breeders that truly love the breeds, are responsible, caring, and feel that they are doing a service to the public and to the breed itself. We spend a lot of money to breed healthy happy puppies and really do not make as much back for all our hard work, as some may think. I also help direct customer to the Boston Terrier Rescue as well. It is always a blessing to see someone help a troubled Boston have a new life. Being a responsible breeder may sound pretty simple, but in reality there are so many things that this entails, it is hard for a lot of people to understand. I am listing just a few of the things we have to plan for, go through and deal with as breeders;
The work, time, patience and money we personally invest in our dogs and litters are most of the time more than the money requested. A responsible breeder is not greedy and is not looking at dollar signs when we decide to have a litter. A lot of the money, actually goes right back into the dogs in many many ways. Along with making sure the dog's and puppy's needs are met, we are also there to provide love to each and every one of these little guys. Holding them, washing them, cuddling them, socializing them, making them so happy to be around humans that they bond to their new families right away! It is really hard to let them go sometimes, because we love them so. Being a responsible breeder also means that we are responsible for each and every little life that was born through us. We need to make sure that each and every one of our puppies or dogs are going to a great home that will provide them everything they will need or want. This includes, a home (indoors for the breeds I work with), a good quality food high in protein, water, veterinarian check-ups, vaccinations, some time outdoors daily, training and above all UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! We have to be sure that our dogs are not going to be abused or neglected in any way. Most responsible breeders will get to know their customers for a bit before letting them have a pup from their kennel, along with making the customer sign contracts to unsure the breeder does still have rights. This is for several reasons. We do not ever want the dog in a pound or to transferred to an unloving home later in life. This is also in case we have made a mistake (misjudgment) and later found the dog to be abused or neglected by the family we entrusted the dog to. This allows the breeder to have legal rights to be there to help the dog. A responsible breeder will not take a dog away from a loving home that is providing the dog with all of its needs. We will get involved, on the other hand, if the dog is showing unhealthy signs of neglect or abuse. Most of the time, no refund is given to the past owners in this situation. I have only had to remove one pet from their original family in my lifetime. Click here for more information Buying a dog is a big step and isn't for everyone. If you don't care to have a dog be a part of your daily life, then you shouldn't have a dog. They want to love you, be loved by you, be given food and water, be able to play, have some running/walking time, lick you all over (sometimes even when you don't want them to), they get into stuff and maybe will even destroy some things that you really care for, they need to be trained, cared after, cleaned up after, they are expensive and it takes time and patience to really have things turn out great. But after all of this is said and done, if you do want a dog to share your life with you, everything you invest in the dog will reward you in the end with a companion that will always be there for you, for the rest of it's life. I do have several references available on request, fellow breeders, customers and friends. I am sorry for having to post all this, but I do wish to explain myself and offer a warning to those that want a dog as another possession, a trend, a fashion statement, or to impress someone, instead of for a loving companion. After all the hard work us breeders do, if you want a dog from us, be prepared to love it and be reasonable for it's life, for the rest of it's life, or we will take it back, without a refund! Every pet deserves a good loving home that will provide it structure, love, a good nutrition and a suitable environment. It is really hard to understand how people can almost destroy a beautiful dog then raise hell with and about the breeder, that only legally took it away to save it's life. Time and Time again I have seen this happen to good honest caring breeders. It only happened to me once and I pray that's also the last. Thanks to all that can relate and understand, Star Isford |
